Vulnerability - What is it and why is it important?
Vulnerability is the buzz word of the year, with Brene Brown championing this in her TED talk. She says that "vulnerability is kind of the core of shame, of fear, of our struggle for worthiness. But it appears to be the birthplace of joy, creativity, of belonging, love." "I am enough allows us to be kinder and gentler to ourselves and to others", was another great insight from this talk.
Vulnerability for me is allowing for growth, to be out of my comfort zone and trying new things. It is asking the question that everyone else wants to ask or asking the uncomfortable question in a kind way that can bring about a better understanding. Getting comfortable with being uncomfortable, allows me to pursue building my own business and pursuing a new career. As anyone looking to change careers during COVID or any entrepreneur can ascertain, this requires a mindset change and getting comfortable with the uncertain. Realising that this is the new normal. It can then become quite thrilling as vulnerability gives way to the joy of learning and expanding our sense of selves.
Today I listened to another great podcast between Brene Brown and Simon Sinek where they discuss "the infinite game", where you play for the good of the whole. Simon Sinek says that "There is no finish line in the infinite game, and everything is temporary. The best thing out of this line of thinking is that there is no wins or losses, no good day or bad day but part of the story, they are just moments in time. A finite mindset destroys innovative thought and trust."
I would say the benefits of infinite mindset is that it allows for better communication, where no one is trying to win in a conversation or compete, where people are comfortable enough to see that improvements could be made in their own behaviour or processes and it in turn improves the overall organisation. Where people move from being error wary to being on the path of continuous development and continuous learning.
